 Overview

Global Girl Media is a non-profit platform that power authentic, female content for girls and young women from resource poor backgrounds and learning them to share their unique perspectives on the world and the stories that speak to them. This platform relies on donations and volunteers, but also the girls putting themselves out there to tell their story and then the audiences reading it.

3…2…1… Donate!

This is the current Global Girl Media Platform on desktop.

If you were finishing up your last bit of lunch during lunch break and had 10 minutes to spare…

Would you have donated or put your hand up for volunteering? Would you start writing a story as a young woman? This all within the little time you hade left browsing this site?

Let’s see…

Have a look at their existing site in the below video.

My guess is - You would not.

Why?

• Because you had to look for enough information about this platform to ensure you chose the right organisation you’d like to donate to.

• You found it took too long finding everything you were looking for

• You didn’t really get the feeling of what the website stood from at first site.

Challenge

How would I create interest to prompt possible donations, volunteers and young girls to tell their stories globally by only relying on User Interface Design? How would I approach colour, typography, layout to guide my users through finding content with less effort? How would I connect with my users, creating empathy and really pulling them to the great cause of this platform?

Discover + Define Pain Points

Looking at some major gaps regarding their current User Interface, some clear elements needed to be focussed on.

The landing page lacked emotional connection. As this would be the first thing users look at when opening the site.

The primary navigation was not prominent enough and takes too much effort in finding what they’re after.

There is no clear call to action or emphasis to what they wanted our needed from the audience

Design Solutions

As a former Graphic Designer, some solutions immediately occurred.

Hero images needed careful consideration as they need to create empathy, hope and encouragement and most importantly capture attention and interest.

The navigation needs to be simplified to a great extent, with colour and size to create prominence.

A colour pallet needs to be selected, with some accent colours to highlight the main call to action points.

Layout needed to make the page interesting but also easy to navigate through, clearly noticing different sections.

Moodboard

Style Guide

My colour palette derived from my mood board and was selected to evoke a feeling of authenticity, experimentalism, diversity of cultures, inspiration and hope.

For typography, a Sans Serif font was chosen to reflect on timelessness, boldness, and youth… where a Serif font was chosen for its news related sense of trust which it is commonly paired with.

I chose to make use of the current Global Girls Media logo and expanded on my design by using the shape from the logo for primary buttons / call to actions.
